The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
